The most formal stones are marble stones and the most informal stones are flagstone floors. Stone floor tiles have a natural uniqueness in color and pattern and this makes stone floor tiles very beautiful as well as durable.

Terrazzo Tiles

Terrazzo Tiles are usually created from marble or they may also be formed from other stone chips that are hidden in concrete. The surface of the tiles is polished to a high luster. They are extremely beautiful and attractive. They also have low maintenance costs.

Clay has been used for making tiles since time immemorial.  Nowadays, the clay can be refined in a variety of ways and this gives rise to different types of tile available.

Terra Cotta

Terra Cotta is basically clay that has been fired but not colored. In fact, it is the same material that has been used for garden pots. A majority of times, it is left unglazed. There may be a variation in the color, but usually has an orange cast. This change in color is due to the variation in the mineral content of the soil. Terra cotta floor tiles have a property of absorbing liquid, so they need to be treated before use indoors.

Ceramic Tiles

When clay is fired in a kiln, it gives rise to a ceramic tile. After this, a colored glaze is added and process of firing in the kiln is repeated. This procedure makes the colors very vivid. These tiles may sometimes be slippery. They need to be treated with an abrasive if they are deemed to be used as floor tiles.

There is a type of tiles called as quarry tiles that are basically unglazed ceramic tiles. The only disadvantage of quarry tiles is that they stain easily and so they should be sealed before they are used as flooring.

Porcelain Tiles

When clay tiles are fired to very high temperatures, they give rise to porcelain tiles. These tiles are highly dense tiles. This makes them highly resistant to moisture. The Porcelain Enamel Institute rates the hardness of porcelain tiles to various groups and this includes Group I that are used in light traffic areas and Group V to extra heavy traffic areas.

3

Vinyl Tiles

These tiles were developed after the Second World War. In the modern age, the process has become highly sophisticated and vinyl floor tiles can mimic any other material and this includes hardwood and porcelain. Their advantage is that they are reasonably priced and are very easy to install.

Thus, these are the various kinds of tiles available that you can use for the floorings of your house.
