Eminent Architect Vivek Rathore Speaks On The Occasion of World Interiors Day 2016

VSR (2)

1. Tell us about your journey as an architect and how has it been so far?
A – It has been exciting and creative every day. I understand the architecture around me and then inside me. As an architect it is a new world every day. I started seeing elements of inspirations in every situation of life. Truly the world in which we live is cauldron of creativity. We have principally never restricted ourselves to any particular style or a design grammar. Research and discovery has been our important tool in evolving design. Our designs whether in architecture or interior are driven more by context and less by content. Our palette of designs include large diversity ranging from mixed use development like City Centres of 10.00 lakhs sq. ft. to Boutique retail interiors of even 5000 sq. ft. Our studio has professionals from landscape, environment, planning, product design, industrial design, art, graphic design which brings in “the much needed wisdom and sensitivity”

We are happy to be appreciated and recognized by esteemed organizations like Institute of Interior Design (IIID), Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Cityscape, AICA etc.
2. For how long have you been in the industry?
Our firm SALIENT is over 10 years old while I have passed my architecture in the year 2000.
3. What are the challenges you have faced?
In terms of architecture, it is good to have challenges, especially in design. Challenges help you to evolve. One big challenge in Bengal is to accommodate the aspirations within a budget. Secondly, we have to increase sensitivity about the environment. So we have to understand that architecture is not only about the built environment but also the unbuilt environment. This is both a challenge and commitment.
4. What inspires you in your job?
It is interesting to witness the entire process of the design being conceived, resolved and constructed and eventually to see people happy to have them. These journeys are about the people and made for the people. Job satisfaction is seeing the people happy.
Everything inspires me. First is the rich inheritance that India brings. Mythology, design, culture, scriptures, sculpture, every time I pause to reflect the rich heritage of India, it inspires me to do something innovative. The more of India I see the more it inspires me.

5. How do you see the shifting trend in the industry?
Architecture is the outside of the shell while interior is the inside of that shell. We see the trends aiming to appreciate this connection actively in design. I also see the Indian folk cycle coming back in contemporary adaptation. Technology has given wings to our experimentations. The digital technology has modified the entire domain of elements in interior spaces.
6. For how long have you been associated with ABID and what role has it played in your professional life?
ABID is a cohesive society and integrates all tiers of the industry like designers, suppliers, manufacturers and consumers. It is building bonds of education, exhibitions and engagements in Kolkata very successfully. Moreover recently ABID is working in the skill development sector and that is very inspiring. I have been associated with it for over 8 years.
7. What is your message on this World Interiors Day?
Let us make responsible interiors. By responsible I mean designs that take care of the people and their environment. Consume least resources of this planet and create smarter designs.
